Tijdens een trip door de Boliviaanse hoogvlakte komen we andere backpackers tegen. Hoi, hallo, hoest? Ja, kut, er is geld van onze rekening afgeschreven tijdens het pinnen. Oja, waar dan? In dat kleine dorpje aan de grens. Toch niet dat ene dorpje? Ja, dat ene dorpje. Terug in de bewoonde (en met internet verbonden) wereld, direct mijn banksaldo gecheckt. Vijf illegale transacties. Tweehonderd euri's. Kloten.
ABN Amro aan de telefoon. Wilde gelijk mijn pas blokkeren (niet doen, niet doen!). Of ik even een politierapportje wilde scoren. Ik naar de toeristenpolitie. In vloeiend Spaans leg ik de situatie uit. Onbegrepen gezichten. Ik doe een bankpas na, daarna een pinautomaat, daarna een gedupeerde toerist. Ik mime wat af. Ze begrijpen. Of ik wel even naar de Nationale Politie wil gaan, die gaan daarover. Kwartier in de taxi, zestien mensen de weg gevraagd, eindelijk bij de juiste balie. Staat er een vent voor me die iets te klagen had over zijn trompet, zat een deuk in, zo liet hij vol overgave zien. Ik zucht maar heb geduld. Als ik aan de beurt ben en het hele mimespel gedaan heb, wordt er begrijpend naar mij geknikt en of ik eerst even naar het filiaal van de betreffende bank wil gaan, voor een rapportje.
Het bankgebouw is ruim en koel. Ik heb een nummertje getrokken maar er komen steeds mensen na mij binnen die eerst mogen. Ik wacht een half uur. Ik heb geduld. Wanneer ik aan de beurt ben, legt de man achter het bureau uit dat het niet hun schuld is maar dat het de schuld is van de ABN Amro. Ik schud van nee en mime nog wat verder. Hij irriteert me mateloos. In mijn gedachten klemmen mijn handen zich om zijn speknek. Dan mime ik een middelvinger en vertrek.
Bianca, van de ABN Amro, stelt mij uiteindelijk gerust. 'Meneer Durieux', zegt ze met een licht erotisch accent, 'ik ga u wat vragen stellen en dan komt het allemaal goed'. Ik mime een hele grote opluchting en laat me vallen in een deken van Hollandse klantvriendelijkheid.
